NIV Psalm 118:22 The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; 23 the LORD has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes. 24 The LORD has done it this very day; let us rejoice today and be glad. 25 LORD, save us! LORD, grant us success!
The parallel phrase in the cry in verse 25 is grant us success! It also is a cry to God! We are often perplexed and confused. We are wise to ask God for guidance. He alone is the One who can lead us to true success. Once we receive his blessings we are eager to give Him all the glory! We were at our “wits end” and He showed up to grant us success. Here are two parallel uses of the verb which highlight its significance:
NIV Isaiah 53:10
Yet it was the LORD's will to crush him (Messiah) and cause him to suffer, and though the LORD makes1 his life an offering for sin, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand.
NIV Isaiah 55:11
so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.
I have a good friend who had just trusted in the Lord Jesus. He was attending a worship service when he heard the crowds singing to Rosanna. He was confused but now he knows it was Hosanna!
I hope that these thoughts will inspire each of us to cry out to God with confidence that He alone is able and wiling to save!
Your servant for Jesus’ sake,
